How to Resize Images for Social Media (Sizes and Steps)
Resize ImageResize to exact pixels, percent or a preset. Free, no sign-up.Each platform crops images to its own shape. If you upload the wrong size, faces get cut off and text ends up outside the frame. Sizing the image yourself avoids that.
Resize with a preset
- Open Resize Image and drop your image.
- Pick a preset (Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and more) or enter your own width and height.
- Choose fit (keep everything, add a background), fill (crop to the shape) or stretch, then download as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Common shapes
Platforms change their recommendations from time to time, so check the platform’s help page for the latest numbers. These shapes have been stable for years:
| Use | Shape |
|---|---|
| Square post | 1:1 (for example 1080 × 1080) |
| Portrait post | 4:5 (for example 1080 × 1350) |
| Stories and Reels | 9:16 (for example 1080 × 1920) |
| YouTube thumbnail | 16:9 (for example 1280 × 720) |
| Link preview image | about 1.91:1 (for example 1200 × 630) |
Choose what stays in the frame
Fill crops the middle of the image. To decide exactly what is kept, crop first with Crop Image using the same aspect ratio, then resize.
Keep it sharp and light
- Start from the largest original you have; enlarging a small image makes it blurry.
- For text-heavy graphics, export PNG; for photos, JPG or WebP.
- If an upload limit applies, finish with Compress Image.
Everything runs on your device. Save the final images to your workstand, for example in a “Content calendar” table or project, to plan the posts.
