Why openWorkstand
Most free tool websites solve one small task, then you are on your own with the file. Most productivity platforms put your work into their cloud. openWorkstand combines useful browser tools with a local-first workspace, so the result of a tool becomes part of your work, and stays on your device.
Free
Useful browser tools without an account.
- 144 tools for PDFs, images, writing, calculations, code and media
- No sign-up, no trial, no daily limits and no watermarks
- The workspace apps are free too
Private
Files remain on your device.
- Tools process files inside your browser; nothing is uploaded
- The workspace saves normal files to a folder you choose (or private browser storage)
- No workspace cloud server, no workspace analytics, no ads inside the workspace
Connected
Tools connect naturally to projects, documents, tasks and files.
- Save a tool’s result to your Workstand in one click
- Attach it to a project and create a follow-up task
- Search finds it later, together with your documents, notes and tasks
How it works in practice
- You merge two PDFs, compress a photo or create an invoice with a free tool. The work happens in your browser.
- After the download, Save to Workstand puts the file in your workspace folder on your computer.
- You attach it to a project, add a follow-up task, and find it again later with search (Ctrl/⌘ K), next to your documents, spreadsheets and notes.
Honest about what it is not
openWorkstand is a good fit if you work mostly on your own device and want your files under your control. It is not the right tool for everything, and we would rather say so:
- No real-time collaboration. Two people cannot edit the same document at the same time. Share files the way you already do.
- No cloud sync. If you want your workspace on several computers, keep the folder in a sync service you already trust (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud). The workspace detects changes made elsewhere and never overwrites them silently.
- No accounts and no recovery service. Your files are yours, which also means backups are yours: download a backup from Settings now and then.
- No OCR or AI features. Scanned PDFs are pictures of text; tools cannot read them as text.
- Two features use the internet, and say so on their pages: voice typing uses your browser’s speech service, and citation lookups send only the DOI or ISBN. Details in how local processing works.

How it stays free
Because openWorkstand stores nothing, it costs very little to run. Public tool and guide pages may show a few ads in the future; the workspace never will, and ads never see your files.
