Private by design
Voice typing uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition. In Chrome and Edge the audio is processed by the browser maker’s online speech service (Google or Microsoft), under their privacy terms. openWorkstand never receives it. How local processing works
Good to know
- The microphone button works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox and Brave do not offer it; use your system’s dictation in the text box instead (Windows + H, or the Dictation key on a Mac).
- Needs an internet connection in Chrome and Edge, because their speech service runs online.
- Accuracy depends on your microphone, background noise and language.
When to use the Speech to Text
- Dictate an email or notes hands-free.
- Capture ideas while walking.
- Transcribe a short talk or meeting.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I press start
Allow microphone access for this site in your browser’s address bar, and check the right microphone is selected in your system settings.
The file does not open
Check that it is one of the supported formats above and opens in another app. Damaged files and password-protected PDFs cannot be read until they are repaired or unlocked.
It is slow or stops on a very large file
Everything runs on your device, so speed depends on its memory. Close other tabs, use a computer rather than a phone, or split the file into smaller parts first.
The download did not start
Look for your browser’s download bar or icon. Some browsers ask once before a site may download files; allow it and click the button again.
Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support voice typing?
Chrome, Edge and Safari support it. Firefox and Brave do not offer it; there you can still dictate into the text box with your system’s voice typing (Windows + H on Windows, the Dictation key on a Mac, or the microphone on a phone keyboard). Speech recognition is provided by your browser, which may process audio with its own online service.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit and no paid plan. openWorkstand is paid for by a few ads on its public pages.
Is anything sent over the internet?
Voice typing uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition. In Chrome and Edge the audio is processed by the browser maker’s online speech service (Google or Microsoft), under their privacy terms. openWorkstand never receives it.
Keep working with the result
