Compress Image

Make images small enough for email, websites and application forms with size limits, like 100 KB or 1 MB. Compression runs on your device, so even private photos stay private.

Free, no sign-up. Runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

How to use Compress Image

  1. Drop one or more images.
  2. Choose a quality, or a target size such as 200 KB.
  3. Download each image or all of them as a .zip.

Features

  • Target size in KB
  • JPG, PNG and WebP output
  • Optional maximum width and height
  • Batch processing and .zip download
  • Shows the saving for every file

Supported formats

You can open

  • JPG
  • PNG
  • WebP
  • HEIC

You get

  • JPG
  • PNG
  • WebP
  • ZIP

Private by design

Your files are opened and processed by your browser on this device. They are never uploaded to openWorkstand or anyone else, so the Compress Image is safe for contracts, IDs, photos and work documents, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded. How local processing works

Good to know

  • If an image cannot reach the target size even at low quality, reduce its width as well.
  • Saving photos as PNG makes them larger, not smaller.

When to use the Compress Image

  • Get photos under a website’s upload size limit.
  • Speed up a blog or an online shop.
  • Email many holiday photos at once.

Examples

A form that needs a photo under 200 KB

Turn on “Target a file size” and choose 200 KB. The tool searches for the best quality that fits. If a large photo cannot get there, also turn on “Limit dimensions” with a max width of about 1200 pixels.

Lighter images for a website

Limit the width to the largest size your layout shows (often 1600–2000 pixels for a full-width image), set quality around 70–80% and choose WebP if your site supports it. Compare before and after before downloading.

Troubleshooting

The file does not open

Check that it is one of the supported formats above and opens in another app. Damaged files and password-protected PDFs cannot be read until they are repaired or unlocked.

It is slow or stops on a very large file

Everything runs on your device, so speed depends on its memory. Close other tabs, use a computer rather than a phone, or split the file into smaller parts first.

The download did not start

Look for your browser’s download bar or icon. Some browsers ask once before a site may download files; allow it and click the button again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 100 KB or 50 KB?

Switch to “Target size”, enter the size in KB and the tool finds the highest quality that fits. If an image is still too big, lower the maximum width as well.

Which format gives the smallest files?

WebP is usually smallest at the same quality and works in all modern browsers. Use JPG for maximum compatibility and PNG for screenshots with sharp text.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your own device by your browser. They never leave your computer or phone, and there is no file size limit other than your device’s memory.

Step-by-step guides

Keep working with the result

After you download, choose “Save to Workstand” to keep the result in a folder on your computer, attach it to a project and create a follow-up task. It is saved by your browser, not uploaded.
