Redact PDF

Share documents without exposing personal data. Unlike a black rectangle drawn on top, redacted pages are rebuilt as images, so the text underneath is gone.

Free, no sign-up. Runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

How to use Redact PDF

  1. Open a PDF.
  2. Drag boxes over the areas to hide.
  3. Download the redacted PDF.

Private by design

Your files are opened and processed by your browser on this device. They are never uploaded to openWorkstand or anyone else, so the Redact PDF is safe for contracts, IDs, photos and work documents, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded. How local processing works

Good to know

  • Pages with redactions are rebuilt as images so the hidden content is really gone; text on those pages is no longer selectable.
  • Check the result before sharing, including headers, footers and small print.

When to use the Redact PDF

  • Black out ID numbers and addresses before sharing a file.
  • Remove names from documents for anonymous review.
  • Hide account numbers on bank statements.

Examples

Share a bank statement without the account number

Drag a box over the account number, balance and anything else the recipient does not need, then apply the redactions. Open the result and try to select the hidden text: there is nothing left to copy.

Why not just draw a black rectangle?

Many PDF editors draw the box on top, so the text is still underneath and can be copied or searched. Here, pages with redactions are rebuilt as images, which removes the content. Pages without redactions are left as they were.

Troubleshooting

The redacted page looks a bit softer

Redacted pages become images so the hidden text is truly removed. Text on those pages can no longer be selected; pages without redactions are not affected.

The file does not open

Check that it is one of the supported formats above and opens in another app. Damaged files and password-protected PDFs cannot be read until they are repaired or unlocked.

It is slow or stops on a very large file

Everything runs on your device, so speed depends on its memory. Close other tabs, use a computer rather than a phone, or split the file into smaller parts first.

The download did not start

Look for your browser’s download bar or icon. Some browsers ask once before a site may download files; allow it and click the button again.

Frequently asked questions

Why do redacted pages become images?

Drawing a box over text leaves the text in the file, where anyone can copy it. Rebuilding the page as an image is the reliable way to remove it.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your files are processed on your own device by your browser. They never leave your computer or phone, and there is no file size limit other than your device’s memory.

Step-by-step guides

Keep working with the result

After you download, choose “Save to Workstand” to keep the result in a folder on your computer, attach it to a project and create a follow-up task. It is saved by your browser, not uploaded.
