How to Redact a PDF Properly (So the Text Is Really Gone)
Redact PDFPermanently black out sensitive content. Free, no sign-up.Redacting means removing information from a document before you share it: an account number on a bank statement, a home address on a court form, a colleague’s name in a report. The hard part is making sure it is really removed, not just covered.
Why a black box is not always enough
Many PDF editors “redact” by drawing a black rectangle on top of the page. The text underneath is still in the file. Anyone can select it, copy it, or find it with search, and some well-known leaks happened exactly this way.
Redact PDF works differently: every page you redact is rebuilt as an image, with the black boxes burned in. The original text on that page no longer exists in the file. Pages you do not touch stay exactly as they were.
Redact in four steps
- Open Redact PDF and choose your file. It is opened by your browser and never uploaded, which matters for exactly the kind of documents people redact.
- Drag a box over each thing you want to hide. Use the select tool to move a box if it is slightly off.
- Go through every page, including headers, footers, margins and small print.
- Click Apply redactions and download the new PDF. Your original file is not changed.
Check the result
Before sending the file:
- Open the redacted PDF in a normal PDF reader.
- Try to select text where the boxes are. Nothing should highlight.
- Use the reader’s search (Ctrl+F or ⌘F) for a word you removed, such as part of a name or number. It should not be found.
- Look at the file name too. “statement-ana-garcia.pdf” gives away what you just hid.
What to look for
| Document | Usually redacted |
|---|---|
| Bank statement | Account and card numbers, balance, unrelated transactions |
| ID or passport copy | Document number, date of birth, photo (if not needed) |
| Payslip | Salary details, tax and insurance numbers |
| Contract | Signatures, addresses, prices for other clients |
| Screenshots in a report | Email addresses, names, internal URLs |
Good to know
- Text on redacted pages can no longer be selected or searched, because those pages became images. Pages without redactions keep their text.
- Redaction is permanent in the new file. Keep the original somewhere safe in case you hid too much.
- If the document has to stay confidential in transit, add a password after redacting.
- To add notes or highlight what remains instead, use Edit PDF. Don’t use it for redaction: its shapes sit on top of the text.
Save the redacted copy to your workstand and attach it to the project or case it belongs to, so you always send the right version.
