How to Merge PDF Files for Free (Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android)

4 min readUpdated October 7, 2026

Merge PDFCombine PDFs into one file, in the order you want. Free, no sign-up.

Merging PDFs is one of the most common office tasks: a job application that asks for one file, a set of scanned receipts for an expense claim, or chapters of a report that came from different people. You do not need Adobe Acrobat or any paid software for it.

The fastest way: merge in your browser

  1. Open the Merge PDF tool.
  2. Drag your PDF files onto the page, or click to choose them. You can add as many as you like.
  3. Drag the files into the order you want. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the new PDF.
  4. Click Merge PDF and download the result.

The files are combined by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, which matters when the documents contain personal or confidential information.

On a phone or tablet

The same tool works on iPhone, iPad and Android. Tap the drop area, choose Browse or Files, and select the PDFs. On iPhone you can select several files at once by tapping Select in the Files picker.

On a Mac without any website

macOS can merge PDFs with the built-in Preview app:

  1. Open the first PDF in Preview and show the thumbnails (View → Thumbnails).
  2. Drag the other PDF files into the thumbnail sidebar, where you want them to appear.
  3. Choose File → Export as PDF.

This works well for two or three files. For many files, a browser tool is faster because you can reorder everything in one view.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can merge? No. The only limit is your device’s memory. Hundreds of pages are fine on a laptop.

Will merging reduce the quality? No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays sharp and searchable and images are not recompressed.

Is it safe to merge confidential documents online? It is safe with a tool that runs in your browser, because the files never leave your device. Avoid services that upload files to their servers if the documents are sensitive.
